New Servers

I did not make a post last night, so maybe I will make two today. Actually I did make one on the baby blog, but it is gone, because it was stored on the old database for testing purposes. Last night I migrated all my websites from vortechosting.com, a service me and my old roommate Steve used, to 1and1.com. This is a whole lot cheaper, something like $3 a month. And for my needs as far as personal webistes it should be sufficient. Atleast until I make a full transition to ruby. I guess I should say atleast until pre-packadged solutions stop coming out of php, like this wonderful wordpress blog engine.

Speaking of WordPress my next mini-project is going to be setting up a Pool Section on the baby blog. If it makes sense to make my final project into a wordpress plugin, I will release it through protoh.com. That is if I can convince Tyler to let me release php code from a “ruby shop”. Tyler just released a mini project GooMap. For anyone looking into using Google Maps on there website, this abstracts some of the geocoding, coordinate mapping, and display logic out for you. It is still in the early stages, but it is coming along.

Well I have a lot to get done today. Mow the lawn do some gardening, get the garage ready for the infamous wall, and clean out the office to get it ready to move to the garage. On top of that I am going to dinner with some friends, so I have to do all that and get cleaned up. What a day.

Say BOOM BOOM BOOM

Since Jeni has been M.I.A. on the blog I figured I would start posting some of my thoughts. For anyone who follows my blog at www.danielroop.com/blog would know that I have made a resolution to post atleast once a day on one of the two blogs. Today you get lucky, I am posting on both blogs.

Enough of the rambling. As the title of this post attempts to potray I got to hear the baby’s heartbeat for the first time today. I know Jeni got to hear it on like visit one, but I have yet to be invited by my wife to one of the appointments so I haven’t heard it yet. Let me just say, it is so cool hearing the heartbeat. I am so excited about my son, and these things just make is seem so much more real.

Hey everyone, sorry it has been so long between posts, I have been telling Jeni she needs to blog stuff. I guess I could be doing that too, we are just slackers. Anyways, to appease the masses (all two of you) I have put up some pictures on the flickr account. You can use the links in the menu. Or you can just enjoy this picture of Brendan’s First Gator Game. He was just as upset as I was that UCF put on such a poor showing of 42 – 0.

Brendan Roop Makes His Debut

Ultrasound080206.jpg

Originally uploaded by daniel.roop.

The first thing I said to Daniel when he woke up this morning was, “Today is baby day!” He just chuckled. Surprisingly the day did not seem to drag on even though in a matter of hours we were going to find out if it was a boy or a girl.

Our ultrasound appointment was at 3:45p.m. We sat there and waited as other patients were called in. While waiting Daniel made the comment, “If it’s a boy we will know it because it is a Roop.”

Every time the door opened we got excited only to find out it was someone else’s turn. Finally my name was called after waiting 45 minutes. Side note: I peed twice while waiting and right before we went in I had to pee again. This baby likes to push on my bladder.

We went in and waited for the technician to put our information in the computer. They had just started using a new system. She then said it was time to see how this baby is doing.

There Baby Roop was on the tv screen. Baby Roop looked like he had grown so much since our last ultrasound. The technician said, “There’s the baby’s heart pumping.” “He?!” I thought she had said he. “THE BABY’s heart is beating. We will find out in a just a few minutes what the sex is but first I got check to make sure everything is alright from head to toe.”

It was so awesome to see all the different parts of Baby Roop. We saw the heart, brain, spinal cord, bladder, and embirical (sp?) cord. Finally she got to the bottom half. “Oh well we don’t have to guess what it is. The baby is letting us know. Do you want to know?” Of course we did. “It’s a boy. See he showing off his penis.” I guess Daniel was right. Roop boys do show there stuff.

I couldn’t stop smiling. I was so excited because I wanted a boy first. It was weird because for the longest time I thought it was going to be a girl. But this past weekend I had a dream that we were at the doctor’s finding out and the doctor told us it was a boy. Then just last night I had a dream that Kye Lynn was having puppies and one of them came out blue. In my dream I wanted to keep the blue puppy and not give it away. Hmmm….Strange but funny.

It took a while to get a picture of the face. He kept turning his head. Finally he turned, looked right at us, and even opened his mouth. As if to say… Okay here’s my face now will you let me go back to relaxing.

And so the results are in—Baby Roop is a boy. Brendan Casey Roop has made his debut to us and all our wonderful friends and family.

New York Day 1

DSC01955.JPG

Originally uploaded by daniel.roop.

The adventure continues. I will eventually get through this I promise.

Our first full day in New York was used mainaly for me to get a grasp of the lay of the land. We started our day by looking for a place to eat breafast. We decided after our very expensive hamburger experience we would look for a diner of some kind to try out. We ended up eating at the Brooklyn Diner. Great breakfast, still a little expensive in my opinion, but really good food. It seemed to be one of those places that tries to claim that alot of celebrities ate there. The showed this by placing name plates at each booth of the celebrity that ate at that booth. we didn’t have anyone really cool, but George Stephanopolis had sat at the table next to ours, which I thought was cool.

After breakfast we took a walk into cenral park. This was really cool, and you can see all the pictures in the New York photo set I setup on flickr (see previous post). The picture for this post was taken in central park. I was very excited about catching this moment, and I thought it ended up really well. Much better than an untrained photographer should be able to take.

Anyways, after central park, we walked down 5th Avenue. And we came to the greatest place in New York. THE APPLE STORE. Ahh yes, it was everything I had hoped it would be. Amazing. That is where I did my post from the apple store. In retrospec I should have titled that entry…The Big Apple…but I didn’t oh well.

Moving on, the Apple Store was fun, but since I wasn’t buying anything it kind of ended there. But I will say this about that. I have a theory about the proposal to buy the land to build the store went like this.

Corporate Building Owner (CBO): Oh what a boring foyer area my building has.

Steve Jobs: Hey I want to build an Apple Store in New York that will be Awesome. Hey CBO you think I can buy your foyer, and build a store under ground?

CBO: Um, I guess so ,we aren’t using it for anything.

Steve Jobs: Great, don’t worry the store will look great, and it will be glass so it won’t block your building. Well It won’t block the first 4 floors atleast.

CBO: Sounds good

Steve Jobs: Oh BTW when the lease ends, I want the the cube back.

CBO: Okay, weirdo.

And that is pretty much how I think the conversation went. From there we went to FAO Schwartz cause it was right behind the Apple store. This was a pretty cool store. Both Jeni and I had been there before, but it changes all that time so it is cool. We walked around a bit, bu the hilights of the trip was, me playing DDR (and doing quie badly), Jeni having me ake a picture with a giant Yu-Gi-Oh statue, Jeni aking a picture with a Lego Hagrat, and me taking a picture with Lego Darth vader and Chewbacca. After we were done walking around FAO Schwartz we got the most giagantic milk shake I have ever seen in my life. It was a lot of fun.

At that point Jeni and I were begining to wear down so we went back to the hotel and rested a little bit. Later that night we went out to find another diner to get some food at, and we discovered our breakfast place, I will talk more about that in the next post.

So all in all Day 1 was very fun, we did quite a bit of walking, and saw some really cool stuff.

Baby Poll I

Hey everyone. I know Jeni and I haven’t been posting as much as some would like. So I decided to allow some user interaction. In honor of our ultrasound to find out the sex of the baby on August 2 I have put up a poll for the sex of the baby. As soon as we find out we will anounce the sex and everyone who was right can feel good about themself and everyone else can feel stupid.

New York Vacation

So this is a little delayed, but I figured I would go ahead and do some posting since I am having some issues sleeping. New York was alot of fun. We did a lot, but there was so much we didn’t do. I will just highlight my impressions, and I am sure Jeni will touch on hers on the baby blog.

First thing when we arrived I immediately noticed that JFK is no where near as nice as MCO (Orlando International Airport). I later found ot this is a trend in New York because LGA was just as unimpressive. After we got to the airport we collected our baggage, and when to find out how to get a shuttle to the hotel. I had to call the company because there was no attendant at the transportation booth. I still am not sure how, but for some reason Super Shuttle has my name as Nathan Daniel. Both drivers got on to me for not answering but they had my name wrong, why would I respond to Nathan.

The hotel was all about the location. I liked it, and I am not a pickey person, but for the money we spent I was expecting a little more than a poorly maintained howard johnson. Know I don’t want to give you the wrong impression, I was happy with the accomidations, but I noticed it was a little rough around the edges. We were however on 56th and 7th which is relatively close to a good chunk of manhatten so location was worth the money.

Day 0 was not so eventful. When we got to the hotel we found out 7th avenue was blocked off, which was cool cause there was an art festival of some kind going on, but it was not cool because we had to carry our luggage a block and a half to the hotel from where the taxi could drop us off. After we got situated we ended up walking down 7th ave to see what all was for sale in the art festival. There was some neat stuff but nothing that we decided to buy. The only other really exciting thing about Day 0 was that we paied 50 bucks for 2 hamburgers, fries, 1 soda, and tip at the Hotel restaurant. Now if this was a decent burger I wouldn’t mind. But this was a realy CRAPPY burger. It was on a kaiser roll, and it was not seasoned at all. Later that night we had our first experience at a local restuarant. We went to Ray’s Pizza. I had pizza Jeni got spaghetti. They were both very good, and I marked Goal 1 off of my list (Getting a Slice of Pizza).

That being said, I am going to save Day 1 – 7 for another restless night. I am going to start to have to blog shorter more frequent posts, otherwise I don’t think I will ever catch up.

Apple Store New York

Just wanted to make a post from within the apple store in New York. It is pretty school. However it makes me a little sad since my Mac Book Pro did not make it before we left yesturday. Other than that our flight was good, and the hotel is right in the middle of everything which is nice. But I will post more about all that later…maybe while were here if I can convince myself to cough up 13 bucks to use the internet in the hotel.
